Irving Klaw's Pinup and Burlesque Photographs

by George Monk

Kindle photobook(s) of Irving Klaw's pinup and burlesque photographs taken in the 1940s and early 1950s are still in the design stage. There will either be a single book with three sections or three smaller books -- mostly pinups, mostly burlesque, and mostly fetish -- filled with photographs from a bygone era. Irving Klaw was based in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He started out selling books but found by accident that selling pinup photographs was more profitable. By 1950 he was publishing a wide range of original and purchased photographs, short movies and comics. Through the 1950s Klaw's focus shifted sharply towards bondage and fetish photographs, movies and booklets. The photogaphs that have been selected, all scanned from original prints, are from the earlier period of Klaw's production, without any bondage.
